Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Key questions regarding turn-key electrical contracting, switchgear manufacturing, testing protocols, and statutory approvals.

SSB Engineering Services provides a complete single-source package: power & distribution transformer procurement (oil-cooled or cast resin CRT up to 33kV/66kV), RCC foundation civil works, gravel fire barrier soak pits, crane rigging, high-vacuum oil dehydration (BDV > 60 kV), Tan Delta/Ratio testing, and statutory CEIG government clearance for grid energization.

We design panels using CAD schematics, calculate short-circuit fault levels and busbar temperature rise, fabricate IP55/IP65 sheet metal enclosures, assemble with 99.9% electrolytic grade copper busbars, and conduct comprehensive Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) including Megger insulation, 2.5kV HV withstand, and relay trip injection per IEC 61439 standards.

Our smart IoT pump controller monitors continuous 3-phase current and voltage. When water source depletion occurs, the undercurrent signature triggers an automatic trip in milliseconds, protecting mechanical seals and impellers from overheating. It also protects against single-phasing, voltage unbalance, and locked rotors, while dispatching push notifications and SMS alerts directly to your smartphone app.

A Power Control Center (PCC) panel handles the main power distribution directly from step-down transformers or diesel generators using high-capacity Air Circuit Breakers (ACBs up to 4000A).

A Motor Control Center (MCC) is specifically engineered to feed, control, and protect electric motors across an industrial facility, integrating Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), soft starters, star-delta contactors, and thermal overload relays inside compartmentalized Form 3b/4b enclosures.

Prior to connecting and energizing high-tension (11kV / 33kV) cables, SSB Engineering conducts:
1. Insulation Resistance (Megger): 2.5kV or 5kV DC test phase-to-phase and phase-to-earth.
2. Very Low Frequency (VLF 0.1Hz) AC Test: High-pot withstand test per IEEE 400.2 standards.
3. Conductor Resistance Test: Verifying milli-ohm balance across all 3 phases.
4. Outer Sheath Integrity Test: DC test to verify zero jacket damage during backfilling.
5. Phase Verification: Confirming color-coded phase sequencing matching the substation bus.

Very Low Frequency (VLF) testing uses an alternating sinusoidal voltage at 0.1 Hz rather than 50 Hz. This dramatically reduces the equipment size while applying true AC electrical stress. Unlike DC hipot tests which can cause fatal space-charge damage in solid dielectric XLPE cables, VLF testing reveals water trees and splice defects safely without degrading healthy cable insulation.

Transformer oil filtration circulates mineral insulating oil through high-vacuum degassing chambers and micro-pore filter elements to eliminate dissolved water, combustible gases, and carbon sludge. The Breakdown Voltage (BDV) is tested per IS 6792 / IEC 60156. In-service transformer oil must maintain a BDV of ≥ 40 kV, while newly treated oil should achieve > 60 kV to prevent internal transformer flashovers.

A Class-1 License issued by the Electrical Inspectorate of Karnataka authorizes a firm to execute electrical works without voltage limits. This includes 33kV/11kV utility substations, HT overhead lines, industrial power distribution, commercial multi-story MEP wiring, in-house switchboard manufacturing, and direct statutory clearance submissions to the Chief Electrical Inspector to Government (CEIG).

An electrical consultant is responsible for design concepts, drafting Single Line Diagrams (SLD), estimating load schedules, and specifying equipment requirements.

An electrical contractor (such as SSB Engineering Services) is the licensed execution firm with the certified manpower, tooling, and fabrication workshops required to physically build panels, lay cables, erect switchyards, conduct live testing, and obtain government energization approvals.

Arc-flash calculations in ETAP determine the incident thermal energy released during an electrical short circuit. Under IEEE 1584 and NFPA 70E, this analysis establishes safe flash boundary distances and specifies mandatory arc-rated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) categories to safeguard electrical technicians.

Per IS 3043 and IEEE 80 standards, the combined ground grid resistance of high-voltage and medium-voltage substations must be 1 Ohm or less (≤ 1 Ω). For sensitive automated PLC/SCADA installations, earth resistance under 0.5 Ω is maintained to eliminate signal noise and equipment damage from voltage surges.
